Highway Department personnel have been busy this week removing election signs placed by roadsides and intersections in Knott County. “The only signs allowed on state property are state signs,” said Chief District Engineer Mary Westfall-Holbrook. It is illegal to place a sign on state right-of-way or to attach to a structure already installed on state right-of-way. Candidates and businesses were notified in a press release that ran in last week’s newspaper that they may remove the signs themselves to not risk them being damaged or destroyed, or otherwise they can be retrieved from the state garage. “We really believe that most taxpayers would rather we spend our time patching potholes or cleaning out ditches than taking down signs that shouldn’t be there in the first place,” said Westfall-Holbrook.
