Hello, from the staff and residents here at Knott County Health & Rehabilitation Center.
Monday, May 28, was Memorial Day. This is a Federal Holiday that was originally called Decoration Day and honored soldiers who had died during the Civil War. The first widespread observance of Decoration Day was held on May 30, 1868. Over the years, the day became an occasion to remember the dead in all American wars and came to be known as Memorial Day. In 1972, the traditional date of May 30 was changed to the last Monday in May. We held a moment of silence for all those whose lives have been lost in pursuing our nation’s freedom on Me- morial Day.
The residents have been enjoying the beautiful sunny weather. They look forward to sitting on the front porch, rocking and reminiscing about the good ole days. They especially enjoy greeting our many visitors. It is not surprising to see our front porch full of smiling faces.
We continue to enjoy our many volunteers who have been dropping by to visit. Anyone wanting to volunteer or be added to our monthly calender of events can call us here at 785- 5011. We enjoyed our visit this past week with the children from the Carr Creek Summer Program. We look forward to their next visit.
We would like to thank Grover Fugate, son of resident Maudie Fugate, for the fresh garden peas that he picked and brought to us this past week. We had a garden feast with the peas and fresh green onions from our own vegetable garden. Everyone agreed that they were delicious. Yum! Yum!!
Polly Anna Bolen, a nurse aide here, also picked fresh lettuce and onions from her garden to share with us. We fried up some delicious cornbread and added some hot bacon grease to our lettuce. Yummy. We are always ready to sample fresh garden food.
Until next week!
