By the time this week’s edition of the Times is on the stands, the Knott County Spring Horse Trail Ride will be only two weeks away.
The Knott County Tourism Commission is working with county government to make sure everything is in place. County employees have begun site preparation, and plans are being finalized for all the essentials provided for guests at the event.
The trail ride’s official dates are Friday, May 4, through Sunday, May 6, but many who attend arrive early. In the past, some campers have actually set up too early, making it difficult for organizers to clean up and lay out the campsite. This year, campers are asked to wait until after 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 29, to begin their stay in the trail ride area.
One of the primary goals of county officials and the Tourism Commission is to retain the event’s safe, family-friendly atmosphere. Law enforcement officers have always had a significant presence throughout the week. Since the trail ride is a drug and alcohol free event, the Knott Drug Abuse Council has pledged their support, and will use grant funding to pay for extra patrols.
Entertainment for this spring’s event will include the Kentucky Headhunters, Georgia Satellites, and Cody McCarver.
Horse owners are reminded that all horses brought to the trail ride must have a current health certificate and record of Coggins test. A visit to the vet by at least April 21 is advised to ensure test results are returned in time for the spring event.
